Intelligent Map of TravelGIS.com Powered by WEBGIS Version 4.0
This very powerful GIS system allows you to select and rearrange map layers from thousand themes, query base maps, zoom in/out the map continuously, click hyperlinks, and look up NAC of any area in the world (click the rotating earth to turn on NAC grid). Scroll down for instructions.

Draw Symbols on the Applet

The following is to show how API function - Draw() works. Input appropriate data in the following form to draw a symbol on the map:

N:
Note: when N = -2, the following X and Y are screen coordinates in pixels;
when N = -1, the following X and Y are longitude and latitude in degrees;
when N > 0, N is the UTM zone number and the following X and Y are UTM easting and northing in meters.
X: degrees/meters/pixels
Y: degrees/meters/pixels

Draw Symbols on the Applet with NAC

If you know the NAC of a house or something else, you can use this API function - DrawNAC() to draw it on the map very easily. You can compare it with the left side input method that uses other geocodes to draw a symbol on the map. It is clear that using NAC is so efficient and convenient. You need type in a very short string to get very high resolution. You can type in NAC: 8CHK Q87P - a NAC of our building in downtown Toronto as an example. Once you see the symbol drawn on the map, you can use zoom in or input NAC: 8C Q8 method on the top of this page to retrieve the map of Toronto to see the exact location of the building.

Instructions

This is a true Geographic Information System that is compliant with Open GIS standard. There are huge amount of maps for tourists, students, teachers, professors, business persons, researchers, engineers, and so on: political boundary maps, elevation maps, satellite images, demographic maps, orthophoto maps, meteorology map, country ranks maps, etc. World Elevation Map in the map list contains a large collection of various maps. Map of the United States has all demographic themes and streets (with street names when the scale is large enough). Here is a list of the components of the system and their functions:
  • Select a map: This is a list control for the world maps and country maps. You can select a map from it and the WEBGIS applet will directly display the map for you.

  • Use NAC to retrieve map: NAC is an efficient geocode for any area in the world. You just need very few characters to define the range of a map. For example, NAC: 8CHK Q87P represents a 25x35 square meter area of our home. I can type in 8CH Q87 to get a map for the neiborhood area (750x1000 square meters) of my home. If I type in 8C Q8, I will get the map (23x30 square km) of Toronto. It's so efficient. You can find the NAC of your home from the map here by moving the cursor to the place of your home, office, hotel, restaurant or something else on the map and reading the NAC displayed on the status bar of the applet. It is a ten character NAC representing a 1x1 square meter area. You may chop the last character of each string to form an eight chracter NAC. Then you or other people can use it.

  • Title bar: The title bar of applet displays the title of the current GIS project, WEBGIS version number and copyright information. Clicking on the title bar will open the WEBGIS's web page.

  • List box of the layers to select: This list box is at the left top corner of the applet. You can click items in the list box to add/remove items of this list to/from the list box of the selected layers for the base map. After changing the selected layers, you have to click Get Basemap button to retrieve the base map in order to see the changes on the base map.

  • List box of selected layers: This list box is just below the list box of the layers to select. It lists all the layers selected and ordered for the base map. Clicking an item on the list, you will remove a layer from the list. You need to click Get Basemap button to retrieve the map with the changes.

  • Get Basemap button: This button is for retriving base map from the map server. A WEBGIS map consists of two parts: base map and user data layers. The base map is the raster map at the bottom. The use data layers are the layers (usually vectors) displayed on top of the base map such as layers of restaurants.

  • Print button: This button is to print the displayed map through your printer. If you need the map on paper, you can click this button.

  • The choice box of map store: This box is just below the Get Basemap button. It lists the map stores available in the map server of the base map. A map store is a collection of map themes. A map theme is a collection of map layers. You can choose different map stores to get different themes and layers and add them to the list box of the selecyed layers. The list box of the selected layers can contain layers from different themes and different stores.

  • The choice box of map theme: This box is just below the map store box. It lists all available map themes in the selected map store. You can choose different themes to get different layers for selection.

  • Query buuton: The Query button is below the map theme box. If it is selected, clicking on the base map (not a hyperlink), you will get a browser window displaying the information of the geographic object on the base map at the location of the cursor from the base map server.

  • Zoom button and zoom factor: The Zoom button and zoom factor edit box are beside the Query button. If the Zoom button is selected, a click on the base map will get a map centered at the location of the cursor with the zoom factor displayed in the zoom factor edit box. If the zoom factor is larger than 1.0, then it will zoom in the map while a smaller than 1.0 zoom factor (must always larger than 0.0) will zoom out the map. However, if you use the mouse to drag the cursor, then the range of the new map will be defined by the rectangle you have dragged no matter what zoom factor is specified.

  • Address box: The address box is at the right side of the Print button. It displays the URL of the current GIS project. A GIS project is a collection of the information of the range, size, selected base map layers, base map server capabilities and user data layers of the project.

  • The list box of user data layers: This list box is just below the Address box. It lists all user data layers available in the current GIS project. You can select/deselect items on it and the change of the user data layers will be updated immediately. User data layers can have various hyperlinks while the base map can be queried by clicking the base map.

  • Logo: The top right corner logo is a logo of NAC Geographic Products Inc., clicking on which will turn on or off the NAC grid. With the NAC grid, you can easily find out the Global Postal Code (an eight-character NAC) of your business, home or any location. You can put the code on your advertisements and business cards to help your customers and friends pinpoit your business or home on any maps with NAC grid.

  • Back/Forward button: These two buttons are for opening GIS projects in the history chain similar to those of a web browser. If the map has been zoomed, the Back button will reload the current project, otherwise the previous project will be loaded.

  • Map window: The map window is the place displaying the map of the current GIS project. When you move the cursor on the map, you will see the coordinates of the cursor in three coordinate systems: pixels, lon/lat and UTM as well as geomagnetic parameters: declination, inclination and intensity. It will also display the action hint: hyperlink, zoom or query.

  • Refresh button: The refresh button is at the button with "+" at the bottom right corner of the map window. Click this button will refresh the map and the data of the user layers. If the mapped icon is shown, the action will also remove the icon.

  • Status bar: The applet has a status bar at the bottom of the map window. It displays the cursor information. Similar information will also be displayed on the web browser's status bar.

  • Legend: The right bottom box is for legend of the displayed map.
